Background
Amy Bonser is a private piano and music educator, a mother of 4 children, and has a professional background in business. Amy has a degree in business from Michigan State University, has studied pedagogy and has participated in many seminars to further her music knowledge. Amy has been teaching piano since 1999. Amy enjoys the challenge of motivating and inspiring each student, whether they are a recreational learner or desire a career in music. She is flexible and structures each lesson to address the individual’s learning style. Amy teaches students of all ages and abilities with the desire to help all people experience the joy of making music.
Amy utilizes a traditional piano as well as the latest technology in teaching her students. The use of technology allows the students to record their performances, play along with exciting accompaniments and create and record their own compositions. The use of technology provides motivation for the newest beginner to the most advanced student. Amy enjoys a high rate of retention giving her the opportunity to enjoy the musical growth of her students.
Amy is a member of National Music Teachers Association, Michigan Music Teachers Association, National Federation of Music Teachers and Livonia Area Piano Teachers Forum. Her students participate in annual judged performance and testing events, receiving trophies and ribbons each year for their superior performance in these events.
Amy’s newest project is Exceptional Music. In collaboration with Katie Shirk, a well-known special education consultant, presenter and educator, she has created a music and movement program designed specifically to meet the needs of children with special needs. This program aims to make music a joyful experience regardless of ability while seeking to address the challenges faced by children with special needs.
Exceptional Music classes incorporate large and small motor activities, social activities, speech and language development, and sensory engagement. Much of the music can be played at slower tempos allowing the children to experience success in movement, as well as singing. The program is research-based and strives to be a beneficial activity for your child.* *Exceptional Music Classes are recreational and not intended as a replacement for therapies recommended by medical or education professionals.
